"Weed Bags of New York" is Series Two of "Post Clarity," a five part NFT docu-series cataloging creative duo Highley Varlet's 7,000 mile walking journey around the five boroughs of New York.
All bags in this collection were gathered off the city streets as the pair walked five marathons a week for one calendar year throughout the city. The bags were chosen with some discernment, identifying and collecting both repeated themes and unique traits as they were encountered.
After the project concluded in June 2021, the duo returned to both famous and common NYC ground surfaces, bringing sets of bags with them and taking photographs against the various backdrops.
The ground surfaces range from common sets of ten (Manhole Cover, Bodega Floor, SoHo Cobblestone) to unique, 1:1 surfaces (Madison Square Garden, MoMA, Empire State Building, etc.). They were then turned into an NFT collection, tracking the background properties as well as other bag traits like subject matter, bag size, dispensary, strain type, and more.
The collection's curation phase overlapped with a pivotal point in New York City's history with marijuana. On March 31st, 2021, the plant was officially legalized for recreational use in the state of New York. As legalization solidifies both in the state and throughout the country, this collection will serve as a time capsule for a very particular era of weed packaging, where famous intellectual property is liberally employed and nascent dispensaries seek to establish brand identity.
